Curry Hammock State Park is 11 miles west of Long Key and straddles the U. S. 1 It begins at Little Crawl Key (mile marker 56. 2)Entrance is on the U. S. 1 on its ocean side.

This park comprises of a group of islands situated in the middle keys. Again, as with many State Parks we have a superlative; here is one of the largest forests of thatch palm in all of America.

Curry Hammock attracts a rich and varied selection of wild life due to the mangrove swamps, hardwood hammocks and wetlands. As the warmer weather approaches you may be lucky and see a rare white crowned pigeon. They love the poison wood berries which proliferate here, so a rare opportunity to spot one of these seldom seen birds.

Kayaking and canoeing is very good here with several miles of mangrove swamp to enjoy. Currents are amenable to these activities here abouts.

Anglers will be more than happy with the channel literally heaving with snapper, snook and trout and you may catch permit and bonefish in the flatsYou will need a license. These are available from sports shops, larger Walmarts that have a sports dep and also on line. Consult the ranger as to how many fish you can take and the best spots to fish in.

A hardwood hammock trail is a joy for walkers and not too arduous at around one and a half miles (though it is not terribly flat)Take your binoculars and camera with you so you are ready for spotting some wildlife.

It is a good idea to take a pic nic with you and there are 4 pavilions and lots of pic nic tables for your use. There are also barbecues for the very organised Near the pic nic spot you will find a playground for the children to work off their lunch while you relax for a while.

Some areas offer good snorkelling; consult a park ranger. The waters are choc. a. bloc with marine fish and the river bed is composed of sea grass. You may occasionally see a manatee, porpoise or shark.

Bird spotters are going to be in paradise; Herons, egrets, ibis and plovers are among the wading birds and in autumn you will see migrating raptors and in summer the endangered white crowned pigeon.

Curry Hammock is part of the Florida Birding Trail which is world famous among bird lovers.

During the summer months, go armed with insect repellant, sun screen and a hat and lots of water.
