Cypress Gardens - A Different Kind of Theme Park - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Other Parks

Cypress Gardens is outside the main area of theme parks but is an easy drive down the 27 and is well signposted. It may be because we went in the second half of November but we were pleased with the lack of queues and the space. One of our previous guests said it was her favourite park because it was truly family friendly, which something for all age groups. It is like stepping back in time to an era of parks, gardens and less frantic enjoyment.

It is located on Lake Eloise and this provides the setting for the star attraction, the water ski show. This really is spectacular and well presented so that it appeals to everyone. The finale is the water skiing pyramid of 6 skiers but there are plenty of stunts to keep you amused. The quickest way of getting to the water ski arena is to take the frry from the Cypress Cove Quay, which is close to the entrance.

The unique parts of Cypress Gardens are actually, not surprisingly, the gardens. The botanical gardens are at the far end and we were very disappointed that we went on a day where the tour with the experts was not available. We wanted to use our second day free ticket to go back, but unfortunately we ran out of time. In the current programme the tours run on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The trees and plants were magnificent and you can find out quite a bit from the signs and notices but it would have been wonderful to have someone to explain everything.

The topiary garden was also impressive and on a scale that you would only see in America. The range was amazing, including giant rabbits, sea monster, peacock, snail, seal and many more.

The plantation gardens were more formal gardens further enhanced by a number of “southern belles” wandering around. It is possible to hire the costumes for a couple of hours in the park and we did come across a number of small girls who were clearly having the time of their lives in their crinolines. The butterfly arboretum is in this area and is a must do for your list

You can get an overall view of Cypress Gardens by taking a rid on the Sunshine Sky Adventure. This is suitable for everyone, including those in wheelchairs. A large wheel is elevated and then rotates so you get a good view of the surroundings.

There is also a water park that is open in the summer and there is an Adventure Grove with thrill rides but these are not the unique parts of this attraction.

If you are travelling with someone in a wheel chair you probably need to know that Cypress Gardens is hillier than some parks and so it can be quite tiring for the pushers. An electric chair seems like a good option here.

The only down side is that we weren’t impressed with the catering.

Is it worth a visit? Definitely yes!
