DUNNS CREEK
Dunns Creek is situated in Pomona Park on the St John River, on the U. S. 17. south, 4 miles from Satsuma and about 15 miles from Palatta.
This area has been the site for farming, logging and turpentine in the twentith century and also in the twenties the steam boats stopped here to load up with water and wood. These boats were carrying cirtus fruit It also acted as the post office for near by Cisco and Pomono.
Dunns Creek is one of the newer additions to the State Park system and is one of their natural experience kind. There are good nature trails and a picnic area and lots of wild life to view.
It is located on a sharp bend of the St John River and is composed of wire grass, scrub and pines in flood plain swamp and hydric hammock. There are 23 natural communities in this park
If you take the trail, it will lead you right to the Blue Pond which is a good place to rest for a while and take in its simple beauty.
Bird lovers will want to time their visit with the migration season but there are resident birds also. Look out for woodpeckers, warblers, kites, hawks and ducks among many others. Take your binoculars and a camera
Every six months there is a family open day so if your holiday coincides with one of these days it would be great to go then.

Your day will start with an amble to Big Cypress accompanied by the rangers who will tell you all about the park and its history.
Then there is a boat ride that intends to show you some of the wild life that inhabits this park. All day long there is food, music and crafts people ready to sell their wares.
There is a pic nic area here, but if you prefer to eat out before or after here are two suggestions

There is no charge for this State Park and it is open from 8. a. m. to sun down. This probably will not entertain you for a full day so why not visit near by Flagler Beach, Ravine Gardens, Silver River or Bulow Plantation Ruins
Do take insect repellant as these natural areas do have more of the pesy critters
