Easy travel with children
Getting ready for any trip with children in tow can be daunting, especially if you are not seasoned travellers yourself. However, with just a little but of forward planning and an extra bag full of patience, your travelling experience with children can be a whole lot of fun! !
The best tip of all is preparation. Make sure the children know exactly what is going to happen and when it will happen, Children often get stressed at the thought of the unknown and a change of routine so try to involve them in as much of your holiday planning as possible. Show them the bedroom that will be ‘theirs’ in your villa rental, let them surf the net and check out the theme parks and attractions, and tell them as much as possible about what to expect when they get to the airport. That way, they will feel confident about their journey and you will set off with relaxed and happy little ones.
It’s a good idea to ensure the children have plenty to do during the journey as well as a selection of small drinks and snacks to keep them going. Although everything you need is available at the airport, it can work out expensive to buy small toys, snacks and drinks in airport shops so give the children a small rucksack each, filled with treats and activities which you have packed at home.
Ahead of your trip start to save up small toys and gifts that come free with fast food meals, on the front of magazines and in party bags. Start popping an extra bottle of juice, a puzzle book or a bag of snacks into your trolley during your weekly shop. Before you know it, you will have collected a whole supply of travel supplies without really noticing the cost.
During the long journey, try to break up the time into child sized chunks – car journey, looking for the check-in desk and holding their own passport, walking through security, watching planes through the window, sitting and having a drink, listening for their seat number for boarding, all small chunks of activity which break up the time for little ones.
Ensure the children visit the toilet plenty of times. Let them stretch their legs as often as possible and allow for down time as well as activity. Keep them feeling fresh with lots of hand washing and regular drinks of water. A plentiful supply of baby wipes is a must.
There is no getting away from the fact that your journey to Orlando will be a long one but with lots of patience, a quiet voice, calm attitude and a well prepared, thoughtful supply of carry-on supplies, you will enjoy your trip with little ones. There’s no doubt at all that they will have a wonderful journey, and always remember – Mickey mouse is just a few hours away! !
