In amongst all the hullabaloo that is Disney and the numerous full onactivities of the surrounding areas, there is one that will return you to agentler, more sedate pace of life ~ horse riding (or horseback riding as ourAmerican cousins like to call it).

Whilst a certain level of skill is required to enable you to take part in theriding the trails, it is for the most part a relaxing and laid back way to spendan hour or so, clip clopping along, man (or woman) and beast in perfect harmony.

Although Disney offers horseback riding as one of it’s many outdooractivities from the Wilderness Lodge hotel and resort, it does feel a littlesterile and pedestrian, and whilst the horses themselves are fine and obviouslywell cared for, and the cast members extremely pleasant and knowledgeable, Icame away feeling that there was something missing.

Not so however, with a ride organised at Horse World, located 12 milessouth of H’way 192, at 3705 Poinciana Boulevard. With over 750 acres of stunningsandy trails and an abundance of Florida wildlife to view en route, this to meis what riding is all about.

This is, to all intents and purposes, a working stables and gives you a muchbetter insight into the care and well being of all the animals. In fact, withadditional activities laid on for the kids, such as basketball, volleyball andeven a traditional horseshoe game, the fun doesn’t have to end when your ride isover.

Horse World accommodates all standards of riders, from beginners toexperienced, and offers lessons as well as three levels of trail riding :

The Nature Trail Ride lasts approximately 45 ~ 50 minutes, and is basically aslow walk on horseback through the lush Florida countryside. Suitable for anylevel of rider, minimum age 6 years (unless accompanied by a parent), it helpsto promote confidence on horseback and is designed to be as non challenging aspossible.

The Intermediate Trail Ride steps things up a few notches, and atapproximately 1 hour in length, has a minimum age requirement of 10 years. Itconsists of walking and trotting, and therefore some previous riding experienceis required.

The Advanced Trail Ride is as you would expect for experienced ridersonly. Lasting 1 ¼ to 1 ½ hours, it consists of walking, trotting and cantering, with the pace set by the riders themselves.

All rides are by reservation only, especially if you have an overly largeparty, as this gives the staff time to prepare and saddle up the horses in timefor your arrival.

With adult prices ranging between $35 and $59 (plus tax) ~ there areconcessions for children on the Nature Trail Ride ~ it’s a fun family activitythat is well worth the money.

My ride at Horse World !!
Hi everyone, my name is Danielle, I live in England, and come to Florida, every year with my family, as we stay in our house, “Seventh Heaven” on Emerald Island Resort, in Kissimmee, Florida. This year we planned to do some different activities, one being, Western –style horse back riding at Horse World. We booked in for an early morning ride and were all very excited. My Nan, brother, aged 6 years, my Sister aged 9 years, my Cousins, aged 7 and 10 years and my Auntie and Uncle, who, have only ridden once or twice, booked the beginners trail, (without a lead rein). Most of them were really nervous, before they set off, and it did take a long time for them all to mount their horses at the Coral. My Mum and I had booked for the intermediate trail ride, as we have horses at home and felt that we weren’t beginners, but, at the same time, having never ridden Western-style before, that we could not call ourselves, advanced, riders, either! We mounted up at the same time as the rest of our family group and watched the others ride off for the hours ride, still looking some what apprehensive. However, when we caught a glimpse of them, halfway along the trail, they were all relaxed, smiling and were absolutely fine and looked as if they were loving every minute! We had started our intermediate ride with a walk , for awhile, then a gentle trot, and then it was picture time! Everyone, who chose to, had their picture taken, we were not permitted to take our own photo’s, on the trail, after that, we walked again for a while. Then we came to a lake, quite large, and the water had overflowed the banks so that the water came up to Casey’s knees, this looked fun!! ( Casey was the horse that I rode, she was about 14hh, and almost exactly the same as my pony at home, called Pure Chance ( Bess), in size and temperament. ~ my Mum rode an appaloosa gelding called CJ.) The lake was fun, as we trotted through it and got quite wet!; after that we walked on and had four or five more trots before heading back to the Coral, where we started out . All the horses were well looked after and were really reliable and gentle, especially, the ones ridden on the beginners trail, they have to be as, most of the people had never ridden before. My Mum and I were not sure whether to wear a riding hat, or not, as in America, they don’t seem to wear one, when riding Western-style. We were given the choice, and did wear hats, but, next time we decided that we probably would not . We both felt that if you are confident with, walk, trot and canter, that we would definitely recommend that you go on the Advanced trail ride. We both enjoyed the Intermediate ride, but, it was not challenging enough, for us, so on our next trip to Florida, we will definitely go back to Horse World again, and we will do the Advanced trail ride, we just can’t wait.!!
