Our initial reaction when heading for Journey at Atlantis at Seaworld was that we were about to sample another water-chute ride. Little did we know what to expect, but the ride designers have excelled themselves by combining the very best in thrills and excitement.
The storyline takes us to the ancient city of Atlantis, which has erupted from its watery grave. As you walk through the “village”, overhead monitors feature an old Greek fisherman who warns of evil spirits and impending doom and pleads for us to keep out….but of course we don’t!!
We board our craft and glide effortlessly along a tranquil waterway where the clever use of lasers and holographs helps create the illusion of a magical land dotted with fountains and starry skies. Our boat suddenly turns and we are in a different world. High up above is the evil spirit, projected in the form of a snarling, hissing, growling mask, and we find ourselves enshrouded in a heavy mist as our boat climbs steeply towards an almost vertical drop. A doorway swings open and down we go.
Those at the front take the brunt of the soaking… and just as those at the back of the boat smugly think they have got away with it, a barrage of water bombs erupt from the watching crowds.
Now this is where the surprises kick in. Instead of disembarking, as you would expect, the journey continues around a bend and a sheet of floodwater virtually engulfs our small vessel. We escape by a second climb upwards with only hidden water jets to contend with at the top of the ascent. Inside the dark confines of the temple once again a ferocious 60-foot dive sends us splashing into the lagoon below…..and still the ride continues.
Another climb brings us to what appears to be a candlelit temple devoted to the evil spirits. Then gliding through the darkness our vessel picks up speed and suddenly we are riding the rails of a roller coaster thundering down a 55-degree incline, lurching to the left, rolling to the right, and finally exploding out into light of day….free at last!!
This really is the ultimate adventure ride, travelling by water and on rails, being pursued by spirits who want to keep possession of Atlantis and who will take you prisoner at any cost. Never knowing what’s around the next corner, plummeting 60 feet to the ground and the addition of extraordinary special effects have created one of the most amazing rides that you can imagine.
Beware you can get very wet……….but it’s well worth it.Page added on: 14 July 2006 Author: Geoff Leach (Villa link: www.orlandovillas.com /florida-vacation-rental-1732.aspx) We aim to provide acccurate and useful information, but if you feel anything provided here is not accurate or out of date, please email us with the address of the page concerned and any commments so we can amend as necessary.
