For people who have holidayed in the Orlando area many times and may be “theme parked out. ” Polk County is suggesting a number of alternative venues for your holiday entertainment.

It is probably best to start with a visit to Outpost 27, which is an information centre on the 27 just south of the junction with the I4. You can spend an interesting hour here looking at the exhibits and films but more importantly collecting all the brochures you will need for exploring the area.

Polk County is actually home to 554 lakes and more than 500 holes of Golf and, although it is so close to all the attractions it seems to exist in a different world.

If you want to explore the lakes and waterways it is easy to rent a boat either to explore or to go fishing, or alternatively you can book onto an organised nature cruise and benefit from the knowledge of your captain. If you are more adventurous and want a faster speed your can always try water skiing. To find out more about this sport you can go to Water Ski Hall of Fame and Museum and there are a number of ski schools

As well as boat shaped boats there are also a number of places where you can take an airboat ride or take a trip on a swamp buggy. This is a kind of tuck with enormous wheels that keeps you high and dry while it bounces you through muddy terrain.

If water is not your thing and you have some adrenaline to spare after the theme parks you can always try gliding, skydiving, a balloon flight, a biplane flight, or closer to the ground try stock car racing. Details of all of these activities are available at Outpost 27.

If you enjoy golf and want to move away from the tourist area then you can try one of the 40 golf courses in Polk County. Most of them allow you to rent golf clubs and there are a range of courses from 9 hole simple courses to great championship courses.

The central lake district is also home to some of the best preserved nature areas in Florida and the Florida National Scenic trail runs right through the area. While walking in these areas you will probably want to keep an eye open for some the 200 different birds that can be found in the area. They are not all there at the same time as while many are resident some spend either the summer or the winter in the area.
