PUMPKIN HILL - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > State Parks

Pumpkin Hill Preserve State Park is situated in Pumpkin Hill Road in Jacksonville (on the I. 95)

This is one of Floridas more wild parks with 4000 acres to enjoy. This park is special for its long contiguous coastal upland.

Pumpkin Hill is formed of basin swamp, depression marsh, scrubby flat woods, pine flat woods and sand hill. Plants include wax myrtle, fetter bush, stagger bush and palmetto.

This envorenment is a haven for storks, hawks and owls and as the Departments work to fully restore the area continues, it is predicted that more wildlife will be attracted to the park.

The walking trails all start from the car park area and they are colour coded for your convenience.

The distance can vary from around three quarters of a mile to almost 4 miles (or from 20 minutes to an hour and three quarters in time terms) You are asked to inform a ranger before you set off and you may be sharing the trail with bikers or horses. Take some water with you.

There are creeks in the parks and you can take a canoe or kayak from one of the launch points. These are located at the end of Pumpkin Hill Road. This is always one of the best ways to explore a State Park.

Anglers have the choice of 3 points to fish from in the unspoilt creeks. The fish are abundant and include speckled sea trout, red fish and flounder. You will need a fishing licence and these are easily available either on line or from a sporting goods store or from branches of Walmart.

The rangers hold a programme of occasional events which include nature rambles, animal invasion talks, exploring the salt marshes and plant protection lectures. There is also an initiative to encourage locals to grow indigenous plants in their own back yards.

This is one of the parks whre you need to take all you need with you. This should include insect repellant, sun screen, sunglasses, t, shirt, sunhat and comfortable walking shoes. Also lots of water and some snacks, a camera and binoculars.

There are many other State Parks within easy reach of Pumpkin Hill and these include Big Shoals State Park, Little Talbot Island State Park and Fort George Island Cultural State Park. Ask a ranger for a catalogue that details all the State Parks.
