Renting a Vacation Home Explained, To Americans, Part II - Orlando / Florida Guide

I am in a minority, I am an American vacation home owner. Most vacation homes near Disney are owned by British families. This is mostly due to their love of Florida and their established acceptance of what they call “self-catering holidays”. In fact the Orlando Villas site and many others were founded and are run by Brits.
As a fellow American, and an owner of a vacation home on the Orlando Villas site (#118), I would like to explain a few things in simple English….uh, simple American English. This is Part II of a guide just for Americans.
Let’s tackle getting the Disney tickets. You have several choices, some of which are much better than others. You can buy the tickets from the Disney or other Park websites, saving a wait in line. Disney never has a park ticket deal on their site, the other parks sometimes do. Otherwise it is just a convenience thing, not a savings thing.
You can also buy online from Orlando Villas (this site). You will save a little money, get the convenience, and have a safe transaction. This is what I recommend.
The worst thing you can do is buy online from an auction site or even worse, from one of the roadside stands that hawk cheap tickets. There are a few problems, one is that the tickets may be no good, you often can’t tell until you try to use them. Or in the case of the roadside stands, you may also be setting yourself up for a timeshare pitch that will make root canal seem like a walk in the sun. There’s no free lunch on Park tickets.
Rental cars….As Americans we get to pay much much less than Brits to rent a car in Florida. Yippee for us. I’ve found that no single rental agency consistently has the lowest rates. And some are frankly worth a few bucks more than others…the no names are more likely to have older cars and strange rental practices. I suggest that you go to a major travel site that lets you compare several agencies at once, I use Yahoo travel. Plug in your dates, type of car, and then be sure to compare the TOTAL price. The per day price by itself is meaningless. Amongst the big guys, pick the cheapest one and you’ll be all set. A common tactic is to pressure vacationers to buy extra insurance, know before you go if your own car insurance covers you, or maybe your credit card company does. That insurance is way overpriced.
Next, the wheat from the chaff in non-park destinations.
