One of my favourite golf courses to play whilst on holiday in Orlando is Legends Golf and Country Club. Legends is a beautiful rolling hillside course on the US27 just south of Clermont (easily recognisable from its water tower) and, from its high points, affords some wonderful views over Lake County.
As a lady golfer with a thirty handicap I sometimes feel a little bit apprehensive when booking a round of golf for myself, especially when I have no idea who I’ll be playing with.
I always pictured a scenario where I turn up on the first tee and there waiting for me are a couple of chauvinistic guys with low handicaps who really aren’t interested in having a woman tag along and spoil their fun.
However, on this most recent occasion I needn’t have worried. I had arranged an early tee time of 8. 00am at Legends Golf and Country Club with a view to avoiding the heat of the day, and had left our villa half an hour early to avoid any possibility of being delayed.
Upon arrival at the parking lot a member of staff whisked my clubs away to the first tee and I was directed to a waiting area outside the pro shop where I was introduced to my playing partners for the day. They were a husband and wife couple from Pennsylvania who were spending the winter playing golf in Florida. I could not have been more fortunate in finding two lovely people who made me feel immediately welcome. They were full of conversation and I quickly felt at ease with them.
The course is an extremely demanding par 72 with plenty of traps and water. From the signature hole fourth, the tee shot is across a ravine to an uphill green that needs to be straight, otherwise the dense woodland will swallow up any wayward balls.
The beauty and challenge of the course continues at every turn but rather than try to describe every hole to you in detail, I can only suggest you come and play the course for yourself, it truly is stunning especially those holes with views across Lake Louisa.
Anyway my newfound friends were never short of guidance or a word of advice and I found their help in playing the course invaluable, and with the assistance of the GPS tracking system in the golf cart (which computes the distance from ball to green) my club selection improved immeasurably.
