Looking for something a bit different, get a bit fed up with all the usual events? Well I can let you into a few secrets that miss the tourist trail and the Silver Spurs Rodeo is one of them.

A couple of times a year the Silver Spurs Rodeo comes to town. The Silver Spurs Arena is located in down town Kissimmee actually on US192. Dead easy to find, Google it and you will find easy to follow directions from any of the villa locations.

Do try and get there a bit early, the doors do open up to one hour before the show, it is the traffic that can build up trying to get in to the lot but it is not too bad really once you get going. We arrived about 20 minutes before the show started and purchased our tickets at the gate, although you could advance purchase also.

The Silver Spurs Arena is indoors and is fully air coned; it is a bit like the old Dixieland Stampede set up but without the benches in front of you. The do have more than enough seating throughout the arena and you can sit wherever you like. We choose to sit quite high up to get a good view of the main arena floor down below.

They do sell food and soda fountain drinks plus they also have a small mobile bar where you can grab a beer or 2. The food consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza and Nachos. (I don’t think Gordon Ramsey would be impressed but they are fine if you are hungry as we were).

The audience was a mix of young and old, Cowboys and girls to seniors and it was a great atmosphere even before the action started!

Another couple of events at the rodeo were chasing after a calf and tying its legs up in a special way. (All sounds a bit cruel but the calf’s are fine and get up and run off back to the pen. . they seem to know the routine off pat).

They also had duo events where one cowboy had to lasso the horns and the other the back legs and the times were recorded. Now although there were a lot of local cowboys the Texans seemed to be ruling the roost and it was a thrill to watch and quite often the audience would be gasping or cheering us included.

They also had a special event for all the kids under 11 in the audience where they brought them down into the arena and tied three ribbons to three calf’s and the kids had to chase after them and grab the ribbon. . . . trust me the calf’s got the upper hand in this game! Eventually the ribbons were caught and those lucky kids got a prize.
