St Augustine Beaches - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Other Florida

St Augustine Beaches are located approximately a 2 hour drive north of Orlando and just a few miles further north than Daytona Beach.

We drove there on a Thursday and arrived at the beach around lunchtime and it was so quite and peaceful it was just great! We parked in the public parking area just up from the beach which is free however St Augustine Beach is one of the Floridian beaches you can drive onto and just park up on the sand, you do however need a permit to do this and you can only park in certain dedicated areas. The usual rules apply for the beach such as:
  • No glass
  • No fires
  • No unleashed animals
  • No litter
  • No overnight camping
The day we visited the beach was watched over by the Coast Guard who was sitting in a truck but on the day we visited there were no visible life guards that we noticed.

The sand on the beach is tropical white and really really soft and warm but not so hot that you can’t walk on it! Although there were some patchy areas with minute broken shell typical of so many beaches but still no problem to walk or lie on. They have nice sand dunes also on the beach but you cannot walk amongst them due to the delicate environments and wild plants that they have growing so the sand dunes are roped off and out of bounds to the public. The ocean was clear and warm with some great waves on the October day we visited.

We had not planned to have a full day at the beach so had only brought some towels, sun tan lotions of a high factor as the sun can be deceiving when you are by the ocean and it is nice and breezy plus a cooler with us and we spent a pleasant couple of hours beach combing, paddling and soaking up the sun and generally just chilling out!

There were maybe 20 people on the whole beach and there were a couple of surfers as there is a surf shack and school just up from the beach. We also saw a sand surfer with a kite which was fun to watch!

The St Augustine Beaches are suitable for all ages as apart from the surfers and us there was a guy with a couple of kids, an older couple walking and a bunch of college students just sunbathing and it was a very peaceful and good afternoon out!
