A must for every time we are in Florida is a visit to the huge Virgin Megastore at Downtown Disney. Situated by the Planet Hollywood Restaurant and AMC cinema, this is a big part of the shopping offered at Downtown Disney.
The choice offered here for music and film lovers is amazing. The store is on 2 floors and covers an incredible 49,000 square feet, and claims to be the largest music and entertainment store in the south east. Whilst the prices may often be beaten by the likes of Wal-Mart, the sheer range is unmatched by any other music store we have visited.
Music
The ground floor alone has over 300 listening stations, with the opportunity to 'listen before you buy'. There are sections devoted to virtually each genre of music - be it rock, pop, jazz, classical, country etc. There is also a large Latin and World Music room.
Many of the titles offered are imports - but visitors from overseas should beware that many of these will have been imported from the United Kingdom, and may be available cheaper at home! But if you are looking for the artist or group you have just seen on television for the first time, this is the place to look. Local, national or international artists are likely to have their latest music offered for sale here.
Films
A huge selection of DVDs and videos is offered - if you are from overseas, do check before buying these that they are compatible with your system at home. There are over 20 DVD viewing stations to check out the films you are interested in - with a huge selection of classics, current blockbusters, musicals, live concerts etc.
Books
As well as film and music, there is a large section devoted to books on the first floor (or second floor as it is called in the US) - over 10,000 square feet. Magazines (including imported music magazines) and children's books are included here.
Electronics
This is also the place to look for mobile phones, MP3 players - just about any piece of electronic gadgetry.
Refreshments
As well as the countless restaurants and snack bars within a short walk, the Virgin Megastore has its own cafe upstairs.
Late Night Opening
The Virgin Megastore opens late each night, 7 days a week, usually to midnight or beyond. There are regular appearances by artists looking to promote their latest album or film, as well as live sets by the resident DJ several nights a week.Page added on: 26 February 2006
