Just as Spaceship Earth is the recognized icon of Epcot, The Tree of Life is Animal Kingdom’s and the Sorcerer’s Hat is Hollywood Studios, Cinderella Castle must be the most well known icon of them all. The castle stands in the centre of Magic Kingdom and is the first thing you will see as you walk down Main Street USA.
Below are some interesting facts about the castle which you may or may not know.
1. The castle took eighteen months to construct.
2. The castle is the tallest structure in Magic Kingdom at 189 feet tall, which is twice the size of the castle in Disneyland California.
3. Whilst the castle looks as if it is built of bricks, it is actually concrete.
4 . Some of the towers and spires are actually real gold or gold leaf.
5. The castle was built to withstand 110 mile per hour wind speeds.
6. The moat which surrounds the castle contains approximately 3. 37 million gallons of water.
7. The drawbridge over the moat is fixed and cannot be raised.
8. The castle has twenty-seven towers.
9. When the castle was first built, Walt Disney had a suite built inside the castle for himself and his family. Unfortunately, Walt died before Magic Kingdom opened so instead the suite was put to use as an office.
10. There are three lifts inside the castle.
11. In November 2007 the castle was covered with over two hundred thousand LED lights for the Christmas season.
12. There are five mosaic murals inside the main hall of the castle, each are fifteen feet high and ten feet across. These murals consist of a million pieces of glass using about five hundred different colours. Some of the tiles are made of real gold.
13. There are thirteen gargoyles on the outside of the castle.
14. The portcullis is permanently raised.
15. Inside Cinderella Castle, on the first floor, is the restaurant called Cinderella’s Royal Table. Inside the restaurant there are over forty coat of arms on display.
16. Before the restaurant was named Cinderella’s Royal Table it used to be called King Stephan’s Banquet Hall but King Stephan was actually from the film Sleeping Beauty and not as you would have thought, Cinderella.
16. The columns, which can be found in the walkways on both sides of the castle, are decorated with birds and mice from the Disney film “Cinderella”.
