The final place with a difference you might want to stay is not in Bardstown but is located nearby close to historic Bloomfield. This is not just a bed and breakfast but is the Springhill Winery & Plantation.
The owners and hosts Eddie and Carolyn O' Daniel welcome you to a 1850s plantation style mansion which is settled into a 2-1/2 acre vineyard and has its own accompanying winery. The historic home is noted for both its Federal and Victorian design work. The house has three main claims to fame. First is the Civil War skirmish that took place here in 1863, second is the architecture of the home with elaborate ironwork outside and woodwork inside and third is the many haunting ghost stories.
This house was built between 1857 and 1859 by John R. Jones with help from his wife and sons. Jones came here with a land grant for 1, 050 acres and 40 slaves. 9 of the slaves were to attend the house with the others living in cabins along the perimeter of the land. You can still see where one cabin is partially standing in a grove of trees in a back field by the winery.
There are a total of six rooms available, each named after a type of grape, and all have great views of the rolling Kentucky hills. A full country breakfast is included as is the freedom to stroll through the vineyards to take in the atmosphere. Better yet just sit in a rocking chair in the gazebo and savour the taste of one of the white or red wines produced here.
Four of the six rooms are located in the main while the other two are in the old Slave Quarters located at the back of the house. The four rooms in the main house are :-
The Cabernet Suite which has double doors leading into a very large space filled with a king ' Renaissance' poster bed. Wing backed chairs and a Duncan Fife sofa complete the room.
The Chardonnay Suite is the smallest room with queen sized bed, but does have magnificent fireplace and mantel and colonnade private bath.
The Merlot Suite overlooks the north slope of the Eastern Vineyard and the full view of the Plantation Elm tree. This room also has a king size ' Plantation' bed with lots of Victorian decorations.
The Rose Suite lies at the top of the flying stair case and is filled with the famous ' Mecklenburg' queen sized bed with rope turnings and classical pilasters.
The Beaujolais Suite and the Pinot Noir Suite are in the old Slave Quarters. The Beaujolais suite has a separate area with a sofa and other seating. There is a queen sized bed and a deep red cherry wood dresser. The Beaujolais suite has a full bath with an oak and marble sink. However it’s a shared bath with the adjoining Pinot Noir suite which is OK if you’re a large family who have booked both rooms. This suite has a black ' Roller Pin' queen bed.
