Now we get to the part that our palettes have been waiting for, a trip around some of the local distilleries. Just as it takes time for Kentucky Bourbon to reach perfection, you will also want to plan accordingly to get the most out of your Kentucky Bourbon Trail journey.
The recommend time to get the best out of your visit is three days, which allows enough time to exploring all that the legendary distilleries have to offer. That can sound a bit overwhelming and if you want to fully partake in the tours then getting someone else to do all the driving and planning is a good option.
One of the best know companies, you will see their buses everywhere, is Mint Julep Tours. They have been running tours for 8 years and offer a wide variety of options depending on your party size and the time you have allocated. They have experienced guides that take you from distillery to distillery and point out all the landmarks in between. They also have some specialty tours with unusual and different options, however as these change all the time you will need to check their web site. If this is something that interests you then check early as these trips do fill up very fast.
If you really want to push the boat out then call up R & R Limousine Service who offers custom top of the range packages tailored just for you. The packages for a single day are based on the time you wish to spend and what distilleries you’d like to visit. During the day they can offer 1, 2 or 3 distillery visits with a stop for lunch, which is not included in the price. The cost with tip is roughly $100 per hour, but the limo will hold 8, so get to together with another couple and you can enjoy a custom tour for not much more then you would pay for the bus.

The Bluegrass Cycling Club has created safe routes for cyclists that offer scenic back roads with less traffic. There are three loops to choose from with detailed map and cue sheets available. All three routes are scenic and hilly, traveling on rural roads of Central Kentucky. They are best experienced by cyclists who use their bikes more than once a month, as the terrain can be challenging.
If you’d rather drive yourself then there are plenty of maps available all with easy turn-by-turn directions. They have been built up over time and offer the easiest and most convenient way between distilleries. It’s an interactive map generation process, so you just need to decide your start and finish and the distilleries you want to stop at. It will generate the driving directions and you just go.
As we had already been in Lexington at the start of this trip we only needed to book a two day tour to visit the distilleries to the South and East of Bardstown.
