For fans of Mexican food there’s a quietly kept secret from tourists on Highway 27 - San Jose’s Original Mexican Restaurant. Just ten to fifteen minutes north on H27/H192 towards Clermont, yet close to the many vacation homes in the Cagans Crossing area.
San Jose has friendly service, comfortable clean surroundings it’s decorated in a traditional bright Mexican style of dark green and terracotta. There are many types of seating to choose from - quiet booths, as well as tables catering for large groups – we were a group of 9, as well as seats at the bar. It’s suitable for all, whether you’re a couple on your own, a family with infants or teenagers or large group on vacation. (Obviously young children will visit in the early evening whilst adults frequent later. )
San Jose’s menu offers delicious authentic Mexican cuisine using a variety of delicious ingredients – including steak, pork and fish. You can try well known dishes such as a burrito a delicious flour tortilla wrapped or folded around a filling, lightly grilled or steamed. Choose from tasty fillings that include a combination of ingredients such as Spanish rice, beans, lettuce, salsa meat, guacamole, cheese and sour cream. Or a quesadilla, popular for being a fast food Mexican cuisine dish, made with cheese inside a corn or wheat dough. (Quesadilla means “little cheesy thing”. ) Tostada is a popular appetizer made from toasted tortillas and topped with a thin layer of refried black bean paste, chicken or beef strips topped with lettuce strips, sour cream, chopped onion, salsa, guacamole.
If you want to be more exciting and feel adventurous try something like one of their lesser known dishes such as the tasty, Sopa de Marsicos, a tasty stew of fresh seafood slowly cooked in a red chilli sauces. Impress your friends with your knowledge of Mexican cuisine when you return home!
Portions are very generous – one of our friends at our get-together ordered an enormous Californian burrito and only managed a quarter of it. Thankfully a food box was provided and the burrito was shared very generously between three people for lunch the next day!
