This is a subject, that for many travellers abroad, usually means another expense before you go, a necessity that we know we have to have, but often pay it little attention when it comes to the details.
Well, after many many trips to Florida doing just that, we had an expereince the day before we were due to fly home, that made me realise, more than ever before, the significance of this paperwork we always had, always paid for, but never (thankfully had to use!!) My husband was taken quite unwell, flu like symptoms, that had ended up knocking him so for six, that I was, from slight panic, encouraged to think he needed looking at.
First, a must if at all possible, we tried our nearest Walkin medical facility. This was unfortunately closed, so as time was rapidly racing towards packing the cases and closing up the villa, and my husband getting worse by the minute, we raced to the nearest hospital, as I didn't know what else to do, and my driving experience in Florida is limited, so I knew how to get there!! Well, we were at the Heart of Florida for about 5 hours, the treatment was quick, efficient and excellent!! I was extremely happy that we had sort treatment, though with reflection, and less panic, I now realise we should have sort medical advice much earlier!
Our bill on leaving was presented and we had to pay on the spot, as scans, tests and medication had been administered, the bill came to several $1000 I was shocked to say the least, though I had read plenty on experiences of others, I guess like so many travellers, I just hadn't considered it as seriously and as fully as I should! Due to a friend being with me, I was able to contact my insurers to confirm what I had to do, and go ahead and pay, then claim when I got home was the answer. I did so, and we got home safely.
But, the experience has certainly focused my attention in a serious way.
Things to think about. We were at a villa so grabbing the insurance documents was easy. But what if we had been out?
- Always carry your travel insurance documents.
- Be aware that your own insurance may require you to speak to them before you go ahead with any treatment.
- Keep ALL receipts for everything you pay for relating to the medical treatment, including a doctors summary of the treatment. You will need this for your claim on your return.
- Most of all, I cannot stress enough how a few minutes reading your travel insurance could be a real panic reliever should you have to seek medical attention.
All was sorted in our case, but I will be better prepared in furure cases.
