Baseball – a flavour of the new season at Walt Disney World
If you enjoy baseball or want to try out a game there’s an opportunity to watch the Atlanta Braves during their spring training. It’s a great way to spend a few hours with the family enjoying an ‘all American’ sport. Dates are usually mid February and runs through to the end of March prior to the start of the new season.
For those new to baseball, the Atlanta Braves are a professional baseball team and are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball’s National League. Their name was first used in 1912 and originates from a term for a Native American Warrior and they have a nickname too – the Bravos. From 1991 to 2005 they were one of the most successful franchises in baseball, wining division titles an unprecedented 14 times, and they now continue to strive to emulate their past successes.
Teams that have visited the Braves at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex include the Yankees, Nationals, Phillies and Tigers. You can see the current players, veterans and up and coming players at Champion Stadium.
Disney often run themed nights adding to the excitement and experience in true Disney style. These have included Princess and Pirate themed games where kids can dress up as one of their favourite princesses or pirates and meet on the first base patio prior to the start of the game to participate in a pre-game parade. There are princess themes photo spots on the First Base Concourse and as with all baseball games there is family appropriate in-game entertainment and games. If your lucky Minnie and Mickey might make an appearance.
If Star Wars is more your thing, Disney hold Star Wars themed games. And yes you can dress up as your favourite Star Wars character and if you watch closely you may see character appearances on the field.
There is usually a game saluting American troops with a patriotic theme with the anthem performed by the military and supporting Veterans.
Tickets for individual games can be purchased online or by phone calling 407-939-GAME. Tickets can be purchased in advance and have an early bird price or buy on the day. Tickets vary from US$10 – US$50 at time of writing. If you have never been you may be come a baseball fan. And if you are not in Orlando during these dates, take a trip out to the Tampa Rays at St Pete’s during the season and enjoy a game with a great, friendly, family atmosphere! Tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
