Boardwalk - Part 1
Boardwalk is a Disney Resort complex which is also open to the general public. Except for the hotels and pools, Boardwalk can be enjoyed by everyone.
Boardwalk is designed to be like the 1920s and has a definite 1920s feel to it. It is built in a circle around a man made lake which has launches that transport people to some of the theme parks or to the hotels. It is a beautiful place to while away a few hours in the daytime or evening.
You can hire tandem bikes with four wheels and up to six seats to ride around and enjoy the atmosphere or take a ride on a water taxi to one of the theme parks or just from one side of the lake to the other. Strolling leisurely around the lake on a sunny afternoon is a sheer delight. You could stop half way round and enjoy a rest on one of several beach chairs or swing chairs on the small beach area. Unfortunately, they do not allow swimming in the lake, so although you may be tempted by the sun loungers at the water’s edge, do not attempt to swim in the lake or you will be hounded out very unceremoniously. Just enjoy running your toes through the sand.
During the day you can enjoy the many shops and restaurants serving breakfast. There is The Bakery which is a take-away cake shop which has the most tempting cakes and pastries you have ever seen. They also bake wedding cakes and other special occasion cakes. Your purchases can be eaten outside in the sun overlooking the lake.
The restaurants specialising in breakfasts are the Belle Vue, Boardwalk Joe’s and the Kouzzina. For all day dining there is the Big River Grill and a superb fish restaurant called the Flying Fish Café. It specialises in unusual fish dishes such as sword fish and shark steaks.
Opening at 11am is the ESPN sports bar. This is just what it says on the tin, a bar that is surrounded by TV screens showing all manner of American sports shown by the ESPN sports channel.
A heavenly sweet shop called the Candy Store is a step back into childhood to sample again all the treats we remember from our childhood. Further along is a general store called Thimbles and Threads. This sells all the usual Disney souvenires plus ladies and men’s clothes mainly with a Disney theme on them.
So if you want to spend a few unhurried hours recovering from the parks, this is the place to go.
