Breakfasting out .
How often do you go out for breakfast at home? 4 times a year? twice? never? Well Americans go out for breakfast routinely and I think I know why.
Most restaurants serve breakfast and rather than the full English or Continenta choices we are used to a typical American menu will have dozens of delicious choices. And the bill will not break the bank. You could eat breakfast out for a month without repeating your order.
Some restaurants serve a breakfast buffet with a seemingly unending array of all the hot and cold dishes you could imagine (and some you have never dreamed of)
This is a good time to try a little of those things you have heard of (but been too afraid to try) This is how I learned to avoid grits; they do not sound very nice; and they ain' t!
You can go up to the buffet as many times as you want and a meal at one of these restaurants will take you through the whole day (unless you are a teenager! ) If you have self control issues this may not be a good choice for you!
Among the restaurants who offer a breakfast buffet are Golden Corral, Sweet Tomatoes and Ponderosa. Personaly I do not like the latter too much but they are popular.
These days I prefer to sit down and be served for my meals so although we occasionally go for a buffet, we tend to opt for a conventional cafe most times.
Restaurants of this kind include Bob Evans, Mimi' s, Cracker Barrel and Denny' s.
Pancakes are aways a good choice and they are quite unlike an English pancake. They are thick and fluffy and most usually come with maple syrup Often they will be served with bacon, egg and sausage. This makes a very substantial meal.
Bear in mind that American bacon is quite unlike the English varieties. The bacon is fattier than even Engish streaky and the ony acceptable way to have it is grilled to a crisp. The sausages are O. K. but very different to ours.
Coffee normally comes with as many refills as you care to order. This would not apply to speciality coffees. Coffee is normally good; tea not so much.
It is normal to tip your server 15% to 20% of the total bil so factor that in when you order.
