Bubba Gumps
There are many Bubba Gump’s Restaurants within Florida, however the one I am talking about is the one I have visited (Universal City Walk). The restaurant is designed around the 1994 film Forest Gump with all the memorabilia coming from the film or modelled on it. The main dishes on the menu are seafood, steaks and burgers.
Bubba Gump’s restaurant is situated on the left hand side of the main entrance to Universal Citywalk (opposite the large Cineplex) and is one of the first restaurants you come to when you get off the moving walkway and have cleared security.
When you arrive you are greeted by smiles and enthusiasm from the servers and this gives a very good initial feel. If arriving at peak times the queues can be long and it is always worth arriving a little early to avoid these. If waiting you will be offered a drink to keep you going.
Once at your seat you are offered time to choose your meals and waiters won’t serve you until you use the licence plates on the tables saying either ‘stop forrest’ or ‘run forrest’ Stop meaning the server will stop and take your order. This is quite important as many people forget to use the signs and wonder why they do not get served for ages.
Where this restaurant excels is the quality of the food. If you like your food to have a very different taste than the normal American restaurants you will like this. Their speciality is the Mahi Mahi spicy sauce or their Cajun spice, both can be added to all of the food on the menu. One of the best sellers and favourites is the ‘Bucket of boat trash’, a mixture of shrimps, fish and lobster. This meal is served with chips or mashed potato. All the seafood is fresh that day and all meals are prepared to order, this does mean it takes a little longer to get served, however the wait is certainly worth it. I had the Cajun spiced chicken which was smothered in Cajun spicy sauce and had bell peppers and fries on the side.
During the meal the server came over and gave us a quick quiz with questions on the 1994 film. It is amazing how much you actually know and we managed to get 50% of the questions right. This I thought was a very nice touch and made the meal that little bit better. The server certainly had to know all his stuff! !
If you can manage it why not try their deserts? We can never manage one ourselves, but by looking at the ones that came past our table on a regular basis they looked great.
Having walked past Bubba Gumps many times without actually having been there, we were surprised by the quality of the food and the good selection on offer. Yes it caters mainly for those that like seafood, however they also have some very nice salads and chicken dishes, not to mention the steaks. Overall a very good restaurant to visit if visiting Universal or Universal Islands of Adventure.
