CRISPERS RESTAURANTS
I really must tell you about an absolute hidden gem of a ‘casual’ restaurant. They specialise in sandwiches, soup and salads. During the daytime, restaurant is probably the wrong word, it is an eatery but they have recently extended their opening hours to include a full service dinner, which as at the time of writing we have not tried, but watch this space, we soon will have.
We have only eaten in Crispers on the 27 just in front of Publix and opposite the Heart of Florida hospital. They used to be owned by Publix up until mid 2011 but they then sold the fairly small chain to a Miami based health conscious company.
Crispers may now be owned by a company that takes our health seriously but they certainly do not compromise on taste and flavour in achieving it, the portions are of a very good size too.
Everything is freshly made to order, even the salads and boy do they taste it, I have never felt strong enough about a restaurant to want to tell everybody about it until now.
My personal favourite is their signature summer salad, it has leaves, crisp apple, mandarin, red onion, chunks of smoked turkey, strawberries, crumbled gorgonzola and candied pecan nuts. Now I have to say that before I tried this I was rather dubious as I just cannot stand the taste of gorgonzola and although I still will not eat it anywhere but in this salad, it is delicious and I cannot imagine the salad without it.
My husband loves their soup, his favourite is the clam chowder, thick and creamy with a nice spicy taste. He has this with either a salad, he recommends them all or half a sandwich. When I asked what his favourite was I got told ‘all of them’.
The staff are very friendly and helpful, even the chef makes regular appearances to check that everybody is happy with their food, he takes on board all comments and if in the unlikely event that you are not happy with anything, it is put right straight away with no fuss. The only time this has happened to us is when they forgot to bring my mango smoothie out and we did not even realise that the full cost of our drinks was being refunded until the manager came over and gave us the cash.
Talking of drinks, they do a good selection of coffee, soda and teas, both hot and cold and their smoothies are to die for, especially the mango one, you feel like you are drinking a fresh fruit every time, on a hot day it is absolutely the best thing to refresh you and on a cooler day, just to enjoy.
I cannot recommend Crispers highly enough – give it a try you will certainly not feel that you are being health conscious.
