Our first trip to Discovery Cove with Disabled Guest
It was our daughter’s 11th Birthday and she had absolutely know idea what she was going to be doing on her Birthday. We asked her what she might like to do and she said she would like to go to Sea World, so the night before her Birthday we said ok, if that’s what you would like to do then that’s where we will go. Off to bed she went thinking about all there is to do at Sea World, little did she know! !
In the morning the alarm awoke us early so not to be late. We gave our daughter 2 cards as one had a cryptic poem about her mystery trip. And when she found out that she was going to Discovery Cove she was shrieking around our villa with such excitement, she couldn’t believe it.
In the car we got with our swimming kit and little else and headed on our way, didn’t bother with breakfast as you get so much food of all varieties all day long in the price.
We arrived at Discovery Cove where we were greeted by the staff and taken to a desk where you had your photo taken which is your pass for the day and also Sea World and Busch Gardens. Because of me being in a powered wheelchair they lent us this fantastic chair, which is great for the beach, it has these massive wheels that make going over the sand easier.
After having our photo taken and then a short welcome talk (which takes place as you walk on down to where the pools are for the Dolphin Swim) we set up our area for sitting and relaxing. My husband positioned me so I could see him and my daughter once it was time for their interaction with the Dolphins. We had a bite to eat for our breakfast.
They then went off where they saw a short video and had a talk, then came out in their groups for the swim. They both got into the pool very gingerly as it was cold at first but that was soon forgotten as they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. They both said the experience would be one they will never forget as they emerged from the water. Because of my disability I didn’t go into the pool with the group as my husband couldn’t hold onto me for that length of time but the instructor was so sad that I couldn’t go in so said if I got changed she would get the Dolphin to come as far as possible up the beach so I could pet one as well which was fantastic, hard to describe my emotions, would love to do it again if at all possible.
After our swim we went and had some lunch, the food was fantastic, the variety of food made it difficult to choose as there was fish, chicken, beef, pork and vegetarians food as well, you couldn’t fault the food. Whilst we sat soaking up the peaceful atmosphere our daughter went off to take a swim in another pool and then we went onto another pool where you could paddle around the fishes, I sat in the water after my husband took me around a small area of the pool whilst they went in further, such a relaxing time. The weather was perfect all day long not a cloud in the sky, we couldn’t of wished for more of a perfect day and hope to return one day soon.
