Drive in Movie.
If you are the same vintage as me, your teenage years would have been informed by American films.
And a big part of American films was the drive in movie. Do you agree?
Well I am pleased to tell you that it is not too late to visit one (with or without the necking that used to be a big part of the experience)
The nearest drive in to your vacation rental home is the one in Lakeland and it is romantically called The Silver Moon Drive In. This one has been in existence for 60 years and is the last drive in theatre in Polk (and Polk is a big county! ) There are still a handful of such Drive In' s throughout Florida but 94% have closed down over the years.
So let me tell you a little about it. We got there via Deeens Still road which looks like a direct route to me but the sat nav disagrees. We went with our hunch and it took around 40 minutes to get there.
When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to be asked for only $4 per person for our visit. If we had had children with us the cost would have been $1 per child (yes really, one dollar)
The second nice surprise was that the films shown were current releases and the third was the price of those essential snacks. A large soft pretzel was only $1. 50 and popcorn, corn dogs and ice cream were a similar price. This was when I discovered that I do not care for soft pretzels, but, hey ho! )
There is a choice of 2 movies so if you are a film buff I would plan to stay for both.
The best way to listen to your film is via your F. M. radio, but of course the romantic way is through the old style head phones. You have to head for a lane where they still have those.
You may worry that this theatre will attract young people (and it does) and that there may be trouble?
Well, not on the night we went so I woud say you are pretty safe.
If you are a flea market addict there is a swap meet here on saturday and sunday; this starts at 5 30 a. m.
