Lowery Park
A day at the zoo is always the perfect family day out and Parents magazine has just voted Lowery Park Zoo the number one in America. This zoo is located in Tampa; an easy drive from your holiday villa.
They have just completed Ituri Forest and here you can see zebra, giraffes, elepahants, wallabies and more.
In the Wallaroo Station Habitat look out for pygmy goats, kookaburra, zebu cows and llamas.
The free flight aviary is designed as a rain forest and is complete with a river and waterfalls. Here you can spot purple swamp hen, blue bellied roller and red legged honey creeper in lovely surroundings.
It would not be Florida without some manatee, would it? and they have them. They are proud of their record of looking after injured manatees and have saved around 200 of them. Florida should be proud of their work with manatees in many different locations.
Make sure to check your schedule so you catch the Birds of Prey Show. They have 3 different kinds of owl, bald eagle and of course American Kestrel and Condor. These shows are always spectacular and this one is very entertaining.
Now we come to my favourite part; the primates. Who could not fail to be enchanted by these entertaining characters. They have around 13 kinds of primate here and they include orang utans. lemurs, chimpanzees and those gorgeous little marmosets.
Make sure you take a stroll across The Boardwalk and visit the 2 interactive areas. In the Stingray Bay area you can actually stroke the sting rays. If ou kiss a sting ray it is reported to be lucky!
Leopards and tigers hang out in the Asian Garden and it is here you can see rhino, komodo dragons and those delightfully floppy sloths.
Little ones will be glad to know that there is a petting zoo and they can also feed giraffe, rhinos and birds.
If you are feeling adventurous you can take a camel safari and look down on cheetas and rhinos.
If it is a long time since you have visited a zoo then do please try a day out here; it is a world away from the lined up cages of our youth. All animals have plenty of room and are in a natural habitat.
Lovery Park Zoo is open every day of the year (except Christmas and Thanksgiving) from 9. 30. a. m. to 5. p. m.
