LOWRY PARK ZOO
Lowry Park Zoo is situated in Tampa and they are proud to say that they were recently named the number one zoo by Child magazine.
This zoo is divided into several distinct areas; first we have to name that gentle sea cow the manatee. You can get close up to these lovely creatures from two under water viewing areas. This zoo has a great record for looking after injured manatees in its hospital and to date have re habilitated over 200. The injuries are usually sustained in motor boat accidents.
An Australian themed area is called Wallaroo Station and houses kangaroos, wallabies and other indigenous species. Children can use a water play area here so take swim suits and towels.
Safari Africa is stocked with elephants, giraffes and zebras or you can even rida a camel. You can take a behind the scenes tour here too.
An especial favourite of mine is the primate family and head for the Primate World to see chimps and orang utans. You need to look hard to spot the marmosets and tamarinds as they are so small but enchanting.
Next on to the Asian Garden. Tigers, leopards, and tapirs hang out by the water and tapirs and rhinos are also here. Especially exciting is a sight of a clouded leopard.
Like the birds? then you will want to take in the Free Flight Aviary. More than 200 varieties of the worlds most interesting birds fly free in the aviary. You can even feed the parrots.
To view the many and varied indigenous species of Florida then go to The Florida Wildlife Centre. Alligators, of course, Flamingos; naturally. Do not miss the inter active family area where you can find crested toads and the rarely seen poison arrow frog.
You may be surprised to find a ride here, but ther is! The Gator Falls Water Flume Ride takes you through the ntural areas of the real Florida. It sounds alarming to hear that you complete this ride by plunging into a pool of albino alligators but rest assured that you will not be lunch! Also at this zoo are a sky ride and a carousel
When you arrive at the zoo check the schedule for the keeper shows There is no extra charge for any of these.
This zoo is located on Sligh Avenue in Tampa and the website is lowryparkzoo. com No need to take a picnic since there are many restaurants dotted around the park along with essential gift shops shop to collect your souvenir.
