Men in Black - Universal Studios
Universal Studios in Orlando is located around 30 minutes from the short term rental properties and communities in Davenport and Clearmont. The park is joined by its sister park Islands of Adventure and forms part of the ‘Universal Studios Resort’ complex.
Universal Studios is aimed at the whole family and has plenty of rides to keep the whole family entertained. What Universal does really well is cater for the younger members of the family. Two great additions to the park are the Simpson’s Ride and the Men in Black ride, both rides aiming themselves at the family market. On this report I will look at the Men in Black Ride.
Located at the back of the park, the ride looks unassuming from the outside, only really marked out by the large tower at the front. When queuing for the ride there is a large outside area that winds around the left hand side. In peak periods queues can be around 1 hour and most of the waiting is under canopy in the shade. Depending on the time of day will depend on how busy the ride gets, but early in the morning and late in the evening is normally the best times to ride, where queues of around 30 min can be expected. As the ride does cater for all the family, do expect a little wait as it can be busy.
Designed around the film Men in Black the ride takes you back to the underground world of aliens and naturally, the Men in Black, who defend the World from them. The ride is a ‘shoot em up’ style, where each person has a blaster to shoot and score points each time they hit an alien. Points are awarded for the harder hits, with the closer ones scoring less. The aim is to become the top shot on your space car.
What makes the ride even harder is the fact you are not too sure what is worth hitting and what is not. As a general rule of thumb, the best scores are with the aliens further away, but hitting them can be tough. To add to this is the fact you don’t often know where you aimer is in the game. These facts make it easy for the children who tend to have a better aim than their parents to score more points! At times my 6 year old scored some very big points, compared to my rather rubbish score! It seemed to amuse him anyway.
A top score on the ride is normally anything between 90 000 and 130000 points, with top shooters scoring a little more than this. My top score was 40000 while my six year old managed to score 70000.
As a family ride that everyone can enjoy, I would certainly recommend Men in Black at Universal Studios. If you can get to the ride early enough or late in the day, you will be able to spend less time in the queues, but even if you can’t the queue does seem to move down quickly. It is certainly a ride that needs to be visited when you come to Florida.
