Ride Guide – Test Track

Fasten your seatbelts and make sure you are strapped in tight – you’re in for a wild ride! Test Track is another of Disney’s premium attractions at Epcot and it can be seen, and heard, from quite some distance away!

Test Track is an auto testing facility where crash test dummies are strapped into cars and whizzed around various different obstacles and high speed manoeuvres to see if both the cars and the dummies survive. The only catch is, you are the dummy!

As you approach the steel drum shaped building you can frequently here the whiz of the cars above you as they hurtle around the track, but more of this later, first you have to get inside. With this ride there is an additional queue compared to the normal standard wait line and the FastPass line, it is the Single Rider line. If you are not too fussy about who you ride with then this is an excellent way to get on to the ride with a minimum wait and without a FastPass, however, if you are with a group you will definitely be split up. The Single Rider line fills in gaps in cars (which are two rows of three) when other groups don’t easily fit the configuration.

As you go through the waiting area it is a good idea to have a really good look at some of the displays of testing mechanisms and automotive components as there are some Hidden Mickeys to look out for. Finally you are herded into a pre-show area and watch a movie which explains the idea of the ride and the various different tests that can be performed to check how a car in development performs. You will then be given a sequence of tests which you will experience on your ride.

There is one more short queuing area and then you are into your cars and away you go. To begin with you pass through some tight twists and turns and test various features like the anti-lock braking system and how the car reacts to heat, cold and chemical environments. Then another serious of tight twists and turns leads you to a final obstacle before accelerating you outside onto the high speed circuit.

I really do love the high speed circuit and although you don’t actually travel that fast (the ride speed was actually limited down to make it more comfortable) the sensation of speed, especially on the banked turn, is excellent.
When you exit the ride another benefit of Test Track is that the fun isn’t over! Just after the main ride and before the inevitable gift shop is a showroom of all different models of General Motors cars, with their doors unlocked so that you can have a good clamber inside! Think of it as the gift shop, but for grown ups!
