SAVANNA PRESERVE

Savanna Preserve State Park is located at Jensen Beach in Port St Lucie. This is roughly 2 miles east of the U. S. 1

This is one of the largest of the east coast savannas and has the distinction of being virtually intact. The savanna stretches for 10 miles from Ft Pierce to Jensen beach.

A savannah is other wise known as a fresh water marsh and they once spread all the way down the east coast of Florida.

Obviously if you can visit in the autumn that is best since the marshes are over flowing from the summer rains and at their dramatic best.

Kayaking is the optimum way to explore this park but there are some dry trails to walk.

A good place to start is at the visitor centre where you can learn all you need to know about the park in order to fully enjoy it.

Anglers can try their luck for fresh water fish in either the savannah or the river. There are some salt water fish in the river for those who prefer that. A good place to fish from is the canoe launch area where there is an accesible fishing platform.

This park plays host to many endangered species and you should have your camera ready in case you spot something interesting. Here you are likely to spot a bob cat, bald eagle, eastern diamond rattle snake or some deer.

This park is excellent for their rich and varied special events programme and these can range from an interesting living history walk to videogrophy lessons to guided canoe tours. Check their website for details of these or call the park to book your place.

There are good picnic areas here so remember to take a packed lunch to eat in these relaxing surroundings.

As you leave the park ask a ranger for the brochure containing details of all the State Parks in Florida. This is well set out and inspires you to visit other parks. You can often fit 2 or even 3 parks in on one day so it is an invaluable tool to plan the rest of your day. Each park only costs a few dollars a day so even in these days of recession are most affordable.
