Shopping in Florida
Even though our exchange rate is not at its best at the moment, it is still a good idea to shop in Orlando. It is about the same in dollars as it is in pounds to buy clothes in America. A good example of that is Ugg boots which are £179 here in the UK and are $179 at the factory outlets in Orlando. Good quality denim jeans which are over £50 in England are about $50 (depending on the make). Some good quality jeans in Orlando are not even available in the UK, for example Gloria Vanderbilt, which retail in Orlando for $12. 99 and are the best fitting I have ever tried.
Another great saving is on jewelry. Most gold, silver, watches and precious stones can be more than half the price of jewelry here. At outlets like J C Penny – a department store- you can get huge discounts on diamond rings and earrings. They often have sales of up to 75% off all diamond jewelry. I wouldn’t like to say they are the finest quality diamonds but they still sparkle!
Of course if you wish to buy very good quality diamonds, you can do this too at the better quality jewelers and also at the diamond factories out of the shopping malls.
I would offer a word of caution though, some things can be the same or more expensive than here such as cameras and videos. Also computers which may look good value in the shops. When you buy a laptop in the US you do not get the software included so you are charged another $100 or so for the windows package. Also the keys are in a different place. For example the £ key is missing but is in fact the hash key, which the Americans call the pound key and the @ symbol is in a different place which does take a bit of getting used to. You must also bear in mind that if anything goes wrong you can not just take it back as you would here, even the one year guarantee is not a lot of good if you can’t take it back to the shop where you bought it.
It may sound obvious, but don’t buy any electrical goods as their voltage is different to ours – believe it or not people do forget this very important point. I know you can buy voltage converters but that then takes away the point of buying it cheaper in the first place as you have to counter in the cost of the converter.
So happy shopping – just don’t get carried away.
