LOOKING FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT?
Everyone we know loves Florida and Orlando in particular and so they should. There is such a diversity of things to do and see but many people do not get past the theme parks and shops or have visited many times and are looking for new experiences.
So here is something a little bit different that you may like to consider.
There is a bit of a gambler in all of us, “no” I hear you say but maybe you just have the odd bet on the Grand National or play the Lotto on Television each week or maybe like ourselves, the Florida lottery in the hope of winning millions of dollars and finding that ideal place in the sun!
What I have in mind for you I think is deemed as harmless fun and it is a trip to one of the Florida Greyhound Races. We visited the track near Naples just recently and had a whale of a time. There are nearer tracks to Orlando at Daytona or Se Petersburg. There were lots of business type people having a night out and it is not at all seedy as some people might imagine from the stereotypical idea of someone who goes to the dogs!!
The Greyhound season is normally late summer so September til the following June whilst the weather is cooler for the dogs but some of the tracks only do December til Easter and others have racing all year long but it is beamed from up country and shown on screens
Entrance is very reasonable and as little as a couple of bucks. Children under 12 normal get in free and in some of the tracks young adults up to the age of 17 gets in free.
You can also get decent and reasonably priced meals in the stadiums, from burgers pizza and chicken wings on the grandstand, to full service sit down meals in the Club house. Most have a full bar or at least beer, wine and soft drinks.
It might not be for everyone but it is worth a visit if you are on the Gulf Coast for a few days or nights and are looking for something to occupy the family at not too much expense…..and you might even surprise everyone and win a few dollars in the meantime!
