Subs are the best lunch EVER!
My first experience of a “sub” was a few years ago at a SubWay eatery in Florida; this was before any had made it to the UK.
I was blown away! Not only was it relatively cheap and massive but you can actually choose which fillings go in it!
Ok, perhaps not so revolutionary now but back then we were absolutely amazed; I can make my own sandwich without making it, and it’s all fresh because I can see the ingredients in front of me and not just pre made then crammed in a little packet!
Quite how the average American (even though they are generally larger than us) can eat a 1 foot sub for lunch is beyond me; we usually buy one and have half each.
We have found some of the smaller less known eateries of this kind to produce the best subs rather than the recognized brands.
Just the initial choice of bread is usually quite daunting. Then the multiple fillings ranging from the obviously salad types up to which kind of meat, types of cheese and which dressing from a range of about a thousand (perhaps not quite that many but it sure feels like it). I often wonder why the staff don’t get bored on their sandwich production line day after day; after all they are actually putting in quite a lot of effort to produce just one custom sandwich; unlike flipping burgers etc.
At last though SubWay has made it to our shores I assume others will follow in their wake – I sure hope so.
I have tried them here and they taste exactly the same but I still like my personal favourites which tend to be hidden in Florida’s shopping malls.
It’s better than a burger because it has a much greater range of variety and certainly more healthy (ok, that might not be 100% true, but you feel healthier eating it than a burger). An iced Mocha is the only drink to have with a sub, don’t spoil it with Cola rubbish.
They are without doubt the perfect lunch with maybe a packet of chips (crisps to us normal folk).
Perhaps I should consider making my own sub at home? , the problem is to have that authentic feel I am going to need to buy a heck of a lot of ingredients and lets face it, it never tastes the same when you have to make it yourself! ?
