The Carry Out Experience.
When self catering in the villa you might choose the Takeaway option. Okay so you mean the chip shop the Chinese or an Indian? Wrong . . . . . . . this is the US we' re talking about and whilst the Chinese and Indian takeaways are certainly available there are other options. Okay so you mean McDonald' s subway and pizza? Wrong again!
Firstly in the US the take away is generally known as the carry out and it' s a service which most popular restaurants provide. When dining out I' m sure we have all pulled into a vacant, parking space only to find it' s reserved for carry out.
When you are dining out look for the carry out menus by the door and pick one up as you leave, many villa owners provide a selection of carry out menus for local restaurants, some will get put into the mailbox and others will be left behind by previous guests who will often indicate recommendations of good service. Of course you will always find carry out menus on the website of the restaurant in which you are interested.
In most cases you will find that virtually everything that' s available inside the restaurant is also available for carry out, some restaurants have a more restrictive menu but in all cases the dishes are less expensive than sitting down to eat them in the restaurant where there are other overheads. It is often not just the appetizer or entrée which is included in the carry out, if the entrée includes free salad or soup then the carry out will usually include the free salad or soup as well. Order a carry out from somewhere like Carrabas for instance and not only will you get your entree and free salad or soup, but you will also get warm bread and dipping oil, paper napkins and even plastic cutlery should you wish.
Generally speaking you can order your carry out over the phone or online and you will be given a time to collect it. Some outlets will request payment by credit card at the time of ordering but others are happy for payment on collection.
When collecting your order simply pull up into one of the spaces designated for carry out, some restaurants don' t even need you to get out of your car, they will bring it out to you, others may require you to go inside for collection. As a general rule of thumb, if they have asked for details of your car when you order, then their intention is to bring it out to you and in this case unlike the pizza place or Chinese takeaway a small tip is usually appreciated. Of course if your pizza or Chinese takeaway is delivered to your villa then the driver will expect a tip.
Carry outs are usually presented in well insulated packaging, ensuring they remain hot on the journey home, if not, there' s always the microwave!
Carry outs are a great alternative to a long wait for a table in a busy restaurant and saves the hassle of getting showered and changed after a lazy day by the pool. If you' ve never had one then why not try it, it' s a far superior experience to a UK takeaway!
