Welcome Back Captain EO

As we have been going to Walt Disney World for over thirty years now, we have seen many changes. We saw the first building of the globe at Epcot and wondered what on earth it was. It was just this huge silver dome in a very deep hole surrounded by foundations and signs of building works about to start. This was about thirty years ago now.

One of the first attractions we tried when Epcot was finished and open was Captain EO.

This was a 3-D movie starring Michael Jackson as a renegade Captain of a space ship crewed by some very weird creatures Created by Disney. These cartoon characters interact with Jackson and are very playful and have names like, “Hooter” a comical elephant, a robot which keeps falling apart and a flying furry creature which lands on his shoulder to help steer the space ship.

The movie runs for seventeen minutes. The story is about this crew, headed by Jackson, who fly to a planet that is completely colourless and they bring colour through the medium of light, music and dance.
It is absolutely awesome. The dancing is sensational and very much up to Michael Jackson’s standard as is the singing. Things that seem to be inert machines come to life with a flash of Jackson’s gloved hand, the crew of characters all turn into musical instruments that play themselves. All of this is overseen by a wicked female leader who is attached to the planet by wires and she spends all her time trying to get the crew captured by guards, but they keep turning from grey robots into colourful dancers. Eventually, of course, she is turned into a beautiful woman in colourful robes and thanks Jackson and his crew for rescuing them.

This attraction only stayed at Epcot for a few years from 1986 – 1994, but has now returned for an indefinite period and has replaced “Honey I shrunk the Audience”.

You do not actually have to be a fan of Michael Jackson’s music to enjoy this attraction. The technology of the movie is amazing; how all the machines turn into people and all the staging in the space ship and with the film Avatar being so popular, 3-D movies are coming into their own.

So if you are going to take a trip to Epcot any time soon, do go and see Captain EO. You will not be disappointed. We do not know yet how long he will be at Epcot so do not leave it until a later trip – you may miss it.
