Flights - Orlando / Florida Guide

Florida Guide > Travelling

When is the best time to book flights to Florida? To be honest there is no hard and fast rule on this subject and many people find they are either lucky or not. There are some golden rules when booking flights and hopefully I can explain some reasons behind them.

Firstly most Airlines will publish flight prices up to one year in advance. There are some that will list further out, but these are generally mix and match flights and not normally direct. These flights that list nearly 1 year from travel mainly list at the high price. This is because companies will test the water to see if people will buy their tickets on certain routes at the higher prices, this is called supply and demand.

Once they have sold some tickets to people who like to play it safe and buy when there is a lot of choice, they will generally try and fill another 70% of the plane with slightly cheaper seats. I have found that around 7 months from travel is a good time to buy as airlines are trying to get rid of the majority of their seats on each aircraft.

When people ask me to give them advise on leaving it to the last minute I always tell them not to do this. For one they may get no choice at all (the flights in peak times book very quickly) and may end up paying over the odds for the last few seats on the plane. For this reason alone I will never tell anyone to book last minute.

If you don’t mind going indirect there are always much cheaper options and they can normally be up to 40% cheaper at certain times of year. Most of the indirect flights will go via either New York, Chicago, Washington or Detroit, and have a connection down to Orlando. This normally can add around 3 – 5 hours extra onto the flight times. But if cost is your main priority then these flights can allow you more money to spend while in Florida.

Which ever way you look at it being able to predict the price of a cheap flight is very hard. A lot of the time just looking on the internet and seeing a good deal one day, does not mean it will be there the next. Make sure you are able to react and book when you see the best deals and hopefully you will find a bargain.
