For our family this is a must do on every visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park.
Festival of the Lion King is performed in an air conditioned theater at camp Minnie-Mickey at regular intervals during the day. The show itself lasts approximatley 30 minutes and whilst Disney recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the performance we have only once not been able to get into the show. The show is for all ages from small children to mature adults.
Once in the theatre you are split into four sections giraffe, lion, elephant and warterhog. The show starts with the four main performers all dressed in tradtional African dress. Klume, Nakawa, Kibbibi and Zawadi ask each section of the theatre to welcome the animals by making the noise of their particular animal section. The lion, elephant and waterhog sections are relatively easy to imitate however, not many people know that giraffe’s make a noise similar to a sheep.
After this initial interaction you welcome the animals led by Timon, Simba and Pumba. There are four floats that enter the theatre including Pumba and Simba. Simba himself is a 12 foot high animated animal who is standing on Pride Rock. The other two floats have a giraffe and elephant on them.
The first main act to appear on the centre stage are the tumble monkeys who not only perform with Timon but their gymnastics skills on the trampoline is something to behold, they stay in character perfectly. The next act is the fire eater and wow, not only does he eat fire but also dances with various knifes. There is then the duet that is performed to ‘Can you Feel the Love Tonight’ with one of the acrobats flying high above the theatre.
There then follows a rousing finale of which many songs from the film are performed. There are African dancers some of which are on stilts. Younger members of the audience are encouraged at this point to join in with a parade around the theatre including playing traditional African musical instruments.
During the show various well known songs are performed and everyone is encouraged to join in, these include ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’, ‘Hakuna Matata’, ‘The Circle of LIfe’ and ‘ I Just Can’t Wait to be King’.
Flash photography and videoing are allowed in the show however, you cannot use a video camera light. The 30 minutes go very quickly and you become totally immersed in the show itself.
