Dining with Shamu
Next time you plan a trip to Seaworld you might want to think about booking to ‘Dine with Shamu’. Well Disney can do character meals but here you get real live killer whales for company while you eat! That takes a lot of beating!
I would recommend that if you want to do this plan in advance and book as early as you can. Not only does it get booked up – usually several days in advance, but also the earlier you book the better a table you get. You can book on line at www.seaworld.com and selecting dining experiences. Otherwise you can always ask at guest services on the way in. We were lucky when we did this and got a cancellation but there were only 2 of us. It costs $37+ tax for adults and $19+ tax for children aged 3-9.
The meal is served at 4.30pm and there is no need to queue – the tables are pre-allocated. Lets start with the food and drink. On the table there is a pitcher of water and of ice cold coke. If you want alcohol then you can order Anheuser-Busch beers. Drinks are all included with in the price. The food is served buffet style and it’s a case of helping yourself. Start with soups or salads and then move onto a selection of entrees from beef stew, seafood Creole, roast turkey, rice, pasta, lovely garlic mashed potatoes and just for a change in the US you even get garden vegetables. There is a separate menu for kids including pasta, hotdogs, roast chicken, meatballs and shrimp. If you want seconds that’s fine but don’t forget to leave room for dessert! The Americans seemed to ignore the dessert dishes and load full size plates with something off every dish. There is a selection of desserts including things like carrot cake, cheesecake, chocolate mouse, brownies and most popular amongst the kids chocolate shamu whales. Finally have a cup of coffee or iced tea to finish and wait for the finale of your meal.
While you eat you are right next to the shamu enclosure, and there are at least 2 whales swimming around. One of the trainers hosts the dinner and talks about life working here at Seaworld. They tell you about what they do degree wise – usually psychology – and about the hardest part of the assessment which is the swim test. We were lucky as we got 2 whales and also the 6 month old baby while there. They brought the baby out on a ledge right next to where we were eating.
I am sure you will enjoy this dining experience as much as we did. The staff were excellent, the food was very enjoyable and it was good to see another aspect of Seaworld.
