The T-Rex Restaurant interior at Downtown Disney
The T-Rex Restaurant interior at Downtown Disney
This is the second part of my review of the T-Rex restaurant so if you have found this part first then it would be best to go back and read the first instalment.
The place seats just over 600 people and while it is large it can still seem crowded and very noisy. This is especially so nearer the front with large numbers of people just looking around.
The interior consists of several different zones, each with a different theme. They have tried to educate as well as entertain and spread throughout the building, including the toilets, are genuine fossils that are millions of years old which have been fixed to the walls. Overall the restaurant has 23 life sized animatronic prehistoric creatures these include T Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and a Pachycephalosaurus.
As you enter the area that leads into the dining sections, you will find on the left, the bar. This has an underwater theme with giant sea creatures, including a large octopus and jellyfish hanging from the ceiling. There is also a real aquarium showing tropical fish and coral and is the only thing that is really outside the overall theme. The bar has embedded lights and these along with others create a waving motion that is meant to look like water.
There are several different seating areas:
The Ice Cave that is covered with ice and snow, this changes colours during the meteor showers to a reddish hue but most of the time stays blue with fossils shown as buried in the ice.
The Fern Forest is which is at the back of the restaurant is a little quieter and has the herbivore dinosaurs.
There is also a third area which is called the Sequoia room, we did get to venture into there so I cannot describe it in detail.
The Kitchen of Fire area features woolly mammoths and pterodactyls and is where they have a large rotisserie over a fire pit.
A large T-Rex greets you when you arrive while roaring and turning its head. Above you can see a giant sun along with the planets. Every 20 minutes chaos erupts with a meteor shower and shooting stars on the ceiling. This together with other special effects and lots of noise means that for a 90 second period everything stops. If your server turns up at that point to take your order you will need to wait unless you know sign language.
The dinosaurs also have a continuing part to play during your meal as each has its own schedule at one, two or four minute intervals. They may make large movements or it could be as simple as the blink of an eye lid, it seems to ensure that the young members of the party are kept entertained.
Our server was not fast but this could have been due to the delays in the kitchen. He was friendly and helpful as we had a special request because of an allergy. If you do have special dietary needs the chef will come out and speak with you if needed. All you do is let your server know.
The food was OK but nothing special as far as I was concerned, for menu choices just think Rainforest Café but give all the items a prehistoric name. Also add about 50% to the price you would find the item outside of this location. The children’s menu was around $12 each including drinks which meant that our total bill for two adults, two kids meals, and drinks was $75 before a tip.
However despite this T-Rex is something you will not want to miss if you have the right age of children with you. T-Rex is not really a restaurant but is actually a dinner show. If you start out thinking that you going out for entertainment and not just food then you will not have any problems.
