A brief history of Cherry Pocket restaurant.
Having discovered that hidden gem that is called the Cherry Pocket steak and seafood shak I was intrigued by the name and decided to research the history of the place and origin of its name.
Well first the name and that is simple. The area was stumbled upon by a Mr Cherry and he and his friend decided that the lay of the land looked like a pocket. This was in the 1940s.
Long before this, the area was used for alligator wrestling and cock fighting as well as for fishing. It is said that it was a place for tough men but not their women.
The fishing in this area is superb and many monster fish have been caught over the years. Cherry Pocket is on the land of a fish camp with lots of simple dwelleings dotted around.
The inception of the restaurant has its roots in a tiny shack that sold tackle and food items for the fishermen It was a very rough place in those days and it is reported that many fights broke out there.
Over the years it has grown like topsy to be the spacious restaurant, bar and outside space that we know today. However, it still looks like a collection of shacks which is part of its charm.
Over the years, Cherry Pocket has had many different owners but since the early part of this century it has been owned by Richard and Elsie who have pledged to improve the restaurant without losing its character.
From simple lunches to exotic dinners or just a drink at the bar Cherry Pocket has it all. Of special interest is there home made desserts lovingly prepared by mama and served in mammoth portions.
The lake view from the deck is pretty good and I recommend that you eat out there if it is fine enough.
On selected days of the week there is entertainment laid on in the evenings. This is mostly friday to sunday but check before you go 863 439 2031
