Airboats at Boggy Creek
Florida is well known for the Everglades, an area which fascinates a lot of visitors. However, if you are staying in the Disney area, a trip to the Everglades will eat a chunk of your holiday. The next best thing is to sample an air boat ride at Boggy Creek!
You can buy tickets in advance from the Park Tickets section of this site, otherwise it is possible to buy them at Boggy Creek. Boats depart every 15 to 20 minutes or so and you may have a short wait at busy times although having been several times ourselves we have never had to wait for more than half an hour – usually a lot less.
If you do have to wait a while there is a café where you can grab a drink and also a shop to while away some time.
When it is your turn to clamber aboard the airboat you take your seat and put on the ear mufflers that are provided. The boats are quite noisy so you do need to wear these.
Ready for the off!
The trip itself lasts probably half an hour although it is hard to measure time as the whole trip is so enthralling.
The guides know the best areas to cover to have the best chance of finding wildlife. The boat speeds out over the water, cutting through rushes that are in its path. Your guide will slow down or even stop when he sees something of interest.
Aligators are the big draw! You can get very close, although they often slip under the water if they see you as believe it or not, they are apparently frightened of humans! Gators become dangerous when they are fed as they associate humans and food – which is why it is a criminal offence with a high fine to be caught feeding one in Florida.
If you are very lucky you may see some babies!
There are turtles, various birds and other wild life to be seen too.
The thrill of riding on an air boat makes it a great attraction!
Many of the friends we have taken on this trip over the years have said it was the highlight of their holiday!
If you are looking for a gap filler during your stay in Florida, or something to fill the time on your last day before you fly home, Boggy Creek could be the ideal thing! It’s certainly one not to be missed!
