Aunt Kates
Aunt Kates On The River is a great restaurant that is indeed right on the water in wonderful St Augustine.
This restaurant has been owned and run by the Using family for over a century. It was originally called Oscars but after it burned down in 2001 it was renamed Aunt Kates. This was to honour Catherine (Kate) Using who was the first owner.
Her grandson rebuilt the restaurant in 2005 with 150 feet of floating deck and 2000 feet of decking. This makes for the most of the wonderful setting in Floridas warm climate.
When you enter Aunt Kates take a while to study the whole wall of old photos; these tell the history of the St Augustine area and the restaurant itself. Then ask nicely if you can be seated at one of the tree tables.
Now on to the food itself and you will be dazzled by the choice on offer. Looking at the starter section there is of course Clam Chowder, that most sumptious and velevety soup. But then again, can you resist Oyster Rockerfeller or Shrimp Fritters or Catfish Fingers? Starters are around $6 unless you opt for Steamed Blue Crab or a pound of shrimp.
Once you have taken the edge off your appetite you are ready to look at the main course options. Fish Tacos are great or maybe Maple Rubbed Salmon or St Augustine Style Shrimp? Whatever you choose they come with 2 sides which might be apple sauce, cheese grits, house salad or even mac' n' cheese.
It would be a shame to not go for something from the sea but for committed carnivores then you can have chicken, pork chop, ribs or of course steak. Also on offer are a few spledid pasta dishes.
Do you have room for a pud? then there is a selection of home made desserts that should have you salivating.
Sometimes all you want is a snack and this restaurant caters for you as well. Seafood roll, pulled pork or soft shell crab sandwiches and burgers are on offer.
There is a childrens menu that has Pasta Marinera ($3. 95) Chicken Strips ($4. 95) hamburger ($5. 50) Cheese Quesillados ($3. 95) and Barbecue Ribs ($5. 95) All of the childrens meals are served with chips (except of course the pasta) They will never demand Mc Donalds again.
On some nights there is live music which adds to the great atmosphere and in the hotter months you will be cooled by water misters.
