Jet Skiing of the 192
Jet Skiing off the 192
Have you ever driven a jet ski? We first tried it on Lake Tahoe in California and so when we arrived in Florida, it was one of the first things that we wanted to find, it took us a couple of years until we found a place to do it but then one day while we were going to a craft shop for my wife, my son spotted a sign on the 192 pointing to the rear of a motel, we went to investigate.
There in the most unlikely of spots was quite a large lake and a little hut where you could hire jet ski’s, as my son was not of driving age, he had to complete a small test to enable him to drive his own ski, but he soon did that and after a safety talk and being given the parameters of the safe areas of the lake, (weeds in the sides that could damage the jet ski’s), we were away, skimming over the waters at 50, 60 and mine reached 65 miles per hour on the straight, banking as you would with a motorbike in the bends and corners but trying to keep at least two hundred yards from each other as per the owners request in the safety pep talk.
We had half an hour of pure unadulterated fun, our friend who didn’t want to come out with us taking action shots on his camera, he managed to capture the speed of the ski jets by focusing on the spray shooting up in a fountain from the rear of the ski and the wake that they produced in the turn and from behind. Half an hour passed and although this was the time that we hired for, no one else was on the lake so the owner didn’t call us in but allowed us to continue speeding around the lake.
At one point I swear that I hit an alligator, I saw just in front of me while I was doing about 55 MPH, so to fast and close to avoid it, the tell tale nose surface, it must have either saw me coming, or felt the bow waves of the ski and was trying to submerge again but I felt the ski hit something and rise slightly out of the water, I think that I just grazed it as it was going back down.
Anyway, the owner called us in, our time was up, slowing down to enter the parking area we parked our ski’s and made our way to the car, a fantastic 45 minutes of pure fun.
