NATURAL BRIDGE BATTLEFIELD
Natural Bridge Battlefield is situated off State Route 363, six miles east of Woodville on Natural Bridge Road. It is in Tallahassee.
This is the site of one of the most heroic civil war battles in Florida. This took place in 1865 in early march. During this bloody battle the confederates lost 3 men and had 22 wounded and the Union troops lost 21 men and had 89 wounded.
The Unions plan was to take control of the area and they landed in Apalachee Bay at the beginning of march to start hostilities. They almost immediately took control of East River Bridge but afterward ran aground.
This was fortunate for the Union Army since it gave them valuable time to marshall their troops. They recruited a creditable amount of extra troops; among these, rather sadly, were boys and old men.
Three battles later and the Union Army departed with their tails between their legs. Talahasse was the only Confederate capital not taken by the Union east of Mississippi.
In truth, this State park is only of real interest to those interested in history and apart from picnic tables, there are no real facilities. However, if you have a fascination with the Civil War era then Natural Bridge should definitely be at the top of your list. Do take all you need with you, particularly drinks, snacks and sun cream.
If you have visited this park before you will be glad to know that you no longer have a long dusty walk to gain access. The Parks department have recently installed a large new car park near the entrance.
Should you be holidaying in march then you are in luck since they hold an enactment of this mighty battle for which there is no entrance charge. You will need to check with the Parks Department for dates for this.
One interesting feature is that Natural Bridge is where the St Marks River drops into a sink hole, only to re emerge a quarter of a mile later.
This State Park is open from 8 am til sundown and entry is free. If Natural Bridge does not engage you for a full day, then there are several other State Parks nearby. Among these is Suwanee River State Park or Ecofina River State Park. Of course, you could always have a look round Talahassee.
