STAYING WEST SIDE OF DISNEY - 192/HIGHWAY 27
Since having our villa (from brand new) back in 2003 we have watched Highway 27 and the west side of Disney develop, mature and become vibrant. From open wild land and scattered citrus groves it is now offering so many restaurants – different cuisines, styles and price.
From Animal Kingdom, exiting at Sherbeth Road, there are a maze of restaurants offering steak, Italian, fish, barbeque food as well as fast food outlets such as Wendy’s, McDonalds, Chick-fil-a. Now driving further west Rolling Oak Common beside the 492 toll road is fast becoming destiny for dinner offering so much choice. (For a dollar or two, the 492 can be used as a quick route to Downtown Disney as well as other Disney parks).
There is Longhorns Steakhouse and as the name suggests it is great for steaks as well as chicken and burgers to name a few. Then close by is the Olive Garden for Italian fare, serving wonder flavours, and then my family’s favourite, Bahama Breeze – food with a touch of Caribbean flavouring.
However, in addition to these restaurants there is Sweet Tomatoes, just right for a light meal and great for vegetarians - a buffet of fresh vegetables, salads and great soups, muffins and pastas. Less formal is Applebee’s, a little less expensive than the previous restaurants – ideal for the family budget. Here you can try ‘Riblets’, Applebees signature dish as well as shrimp, chicken pasta and salads. Another interesting eatery is the Orlando Miller Ale House, a very popular sports bar. (Children are allowed). Great fun offering good value for money it has two signature dishes. Zingers which are boneless chicken wings coated in a choice of sauces and home made ice cream cake dessert known as Captain Jack’s. So from sandwiches to seafood, to pasta and steak this is a fun place to dine.
Four more restaurant’s are rumoured to be coming including Joes Crab Shack, the Texas Steak House, whilst a Panera Bread is also approved for opening. This bakery makes the most delicious bread, freshly baked, bagels, egg soufflés, pastries and sweets.
Continue driving further down west 192 you’ll find Houlihans with its restaurant and outside bar, Pizza Hut and a popular Denny’s (after arriving in the US in the late afternoon/evening we always stop here for breakfast on our first day! ) and Papa Johns our favourite pizza takeout. Turning north on to H27, the popular Cagan’s Crossing area, you see a fantastic choice of take outs: McDonald’s, Wendy’s, John Silver (fish), Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts soon to arrive. Restaurants here include Chillis (Mexican), Santa Fe Steakhouse. Just south of the 192 is another Applebee’s.
Time doesn’t stand still – by the time you read this another restaurant may be there! Come enjoy the food – you’ll need a long vacation to try them all! !
