SEABRANCH PRAIRIE

Seabranch Prairie State Park is located in Cove Road about 10 miles south of Stuart. You can reach this park via the S. R. A. 1. A

The U. S. P. of this park is having the most natural communities within a small area (one mile)Here you can see scrubby flat woods, mangrove swamp, a bay gill community, and pine scrub.

The afore mentioned bay gill community is also known as bay head and is a swampy terrain featuring lolbolly and sweet bay. The water from this bay gill eventually reaches the tidal marshes of the Indian River Lagoon.

The geology of Seabranch has been created by ancient oceans that have formed these diverse communities.

There are miles of trails to explore which are divided into south loop and north loop; these loops run the perimeter and are divided by a forest road.

South loop measures about 2 miles and has green briar and love vine. Look out for an ancient oak which is the venue for their Halloween celebrations.

North loop measures over 3 miles and features almost head height rosemary. Both trails were created by the Florida Trail Association (Tropical Trekkies Chapter)

Bird spotting is especially good during the migration season; you can print off a full list from the website.

The terrain is very attractive to a wide variety of wildlife and you may spot an Eastern Indian Snake, Florida Scrub Jay, bob cat, gopher tortoise or a Florida sand hill crane.

In the planning is a board walk which will make the observation much better.

It is vital to note that there is absolutely no drinking water at this park so you must take your own (more than you think you need) The trails may be more challenging than is safe foe some age groups or fitness abilities.

In addition to water take some snacks and a compass; a mobile phone is also a good idea.

Put in your backpack some high factor sun screen, good insect repellant, a sun hat and sun glasses. Personally I prefer to wear long trousers tucked into socks at parks like these.

Good walking shoes and light coloured covering t. shirts should be worn. I would also only walk with at least one other person.

There are some other good parks within reach of this one; these are some of them: Avalon State Park, Fort Pieerce Inlet State Park and St Lucie inlet Preserve State Park.
